I hope that getting your PAT testing done gives you a sigh of relief and responsibility.
Especially after the recent big story of an appliance catching fire (and also yet another example of bodged work, on low budgets).
But I have been an electrician since 1988 (Yes, I know, I don’t look it!) and my company will be TEN years old in August.
That means I have seen a LOT of scary stuff right here in Leeds, on a DAILY basis!! I actually have a photo library, which one day may get released as an eBook!
Anyway, what’s my point?
The point is that appliances are only a small part of the picture, and MOST Electrical fires (or NEAR fires) are caused by the wiring itself! Which is scary as most of it is hidden from view!
Now, I consider myself to be a regular life saver (but without the recognition of the Emergency Services – after all, I am the one who prevents them going out in the first place!).
I claim this because I carry out a LOT of Electrical Inspections and not many of them here in Leeds actually pass first time. I uncover a LOT of fire hazards and stuff that is actually burning out there and then!!
It’s always a relief when I do an Electrical inspection AHEAD of something worse happening, but sadly, I have also attended burnt down houses. These don’t get put on the news!
Generally speaking, those homes that are origional and untouched are the ones that have few or no issues.
Unfortunately it’s when people choose to use the Kitchen fitter, the Builder, the DIY husband, the brother-in-law, Dave the “know it all” down the pub … to “deal with” the wiring side (“oh it’s only a couple of wires!!” Doh!!).
Also increasingly (despite knowledge!) people are using Bodgit and Scarper to do the wiring. There are LOTS of these in Leeds too!
They then get left with no certificate and a ton of problems (Constant tripping or flickering is the BEST of the problems! It’s what lurks beneath that is worse).
Enough moaning … I wanted to let you know there are several FREE RESOURCES in my Downloads section.
So help yourself to it.
THEN let me know if you have any questions, as I don’t mind educating people at all, especially if it makes you safer (or more aware of how to spot issues, at the very least!).
Thanks,
Simon
