Autumn and Winter months are when Electricians get to fix a lot of Outdoor lights. The nights are drawing in. You go to check your PIR Floodlight it doesn’t come on! But is it yet another Halogen lamp (some say “Bulb”) gone? Surely the fitting itself is broken? Maybe you have an LED version because that’s all the rage nowadays. But sadly a lot of those are failing too!
But why is it that these fail so often (Halogen AND LED)? And more importantly, what can you do about it?
Well, over my 31 years in the Industry, I’ve seen a LOT of changes. From standards changing (for various reasons) to part quality fluctuations (again for numerous reasons). But I’ve also managed to identify what catches people out (both customers and Electricians too) …
First off … Outdoor equipment gets all the harsh environments thrown at it. A lot of floodlights don’t even have the right cable! The correct cable (which withstands both UV and heat, plus extreme cold and snow/ice) is not a large cost. But standard “twin and earth” cable is NOT suitable. It will end up brittle and cracked over time.
Secondly … Physics! A Halogen, Tungsten or other type of lamp does not like heat fluctuations. When something starts from cold, gets switched and and gets super hot, that puts a lot of strain on the material. So the metals used are made to withstand this, but they only have a particular lifespan of the amount of “switching times” that it can withstand on average.
Third … Quality. Those bargain lights and the bargain replacement lamps you got … Well, I don’t think I need to say any more on that. But also if bargain “Dave from the pub” fitted them, then this has the same effect on how long you’d expect it to last.
Fourth … The LED Myth is the one where you get told that “LED Last for 30,000 hours”. Well, Yes and No! Manufacturers have massively dropped prices on LED so it great. You can now get these at a better price as the Halogen and Tungsten version are being phased out now. BUT there’s a LOT of fittings last only a few months! The next step (in part) explains why …
Fifth … The great Branding war! I used to be an eBay Power Seller back in the day! I also have more recently been to Las Vegas and did some fantastic training on how to create your own Branded product (For Amazon and also wholesale such as Supermarkets and more!). It’s really clear that a some of the people that have been on this type of training are releasing some massively inferior products. Mine was high end, but there are some less decent training courses out there. The problem is many of these products are also Electronic items. And worse, some UK wholesalers are starting to sell these products.
So as you can hopefully now see, it’s not just about you being educated in these things, but the Electrician too.
If you are looking to finally sort out a problematic light (Indoor or Out) then get in touch.
I don’t mind helping you out (even if I’m not the one who does it for you).
Stay safe and secure (these lights are a great deterrent for amateur burglars) and get this sorted once and for all.
